On-board Galvanic Isolation for High Voltages using PCB-integrated optical waveguides

Galvanic isolation is required to separate different voltage levels from each other, and thus represents an important topic in many power electronic applications. Common solutions provide small bandwidth and limited isolation voltage only. PCB integrated optical waveguides are a disruptive solution to overcome these limitations. Planar waveguides of different lengths, and the use of high-speed transceivers enables unmatched high voltages and fast switching speeds. In this presentation we discuss how this solution can be integrated into existing packages and highlight applications within industrial, automotive and medical power electronics.
